The TV anime of this from the early 70s is surprisingly worth watching – multicoloured psychedelic trippiness, incredibly girly and knowing yet full of entertaining violence against Go Nagai demons with breasts in odd places, pervy lesbian teachers, cross-dressing, costume changes etc. The animation’s aged better than most other things that old that I’ve seen, so it must’ve had quite a budget.

Sadly only the first few episodes are fansubbed, but it’s worth tracking down. Never seen the OVA though :).

I finished what is called “New” Cutey Honey anime, eight episodes from around 1990 assembled by ADV Films.

It’s interesting from an anime historian’s point of view, but, for the rest of us, by releasing so few episodes, ADV has done mankind a favor.

I loved this film. It was almost perfect. The final confrontation was oddly slow, though.

“To be honest, I wouldn’t mind him animating this if the quality of the opening theme sequence is anything to go by.”

The anime version is an OVA called Re: Cutie Honey. It’s also directed by Anno and uses the same opening animation, but the story is just a bit different. Has a lovely retro flavor, though, very fitting for an homage to the world’s first magical girl.

Good man! I believe xkcd effectively demonstrated the so-bad-it's-good effect. ;) I've never seen the animated version though, so I look forward to your thoughts on it!

All right! You’ve convinced me. I’ll watch it … after I watch the original series first. No way I’m going to understand the movie’s sublime profundities if I don’t get all the references, right? Heh.
