Yeah, Sophia is brilliant at this point in the story. I was quite surprised at how attached I got to the characters, which makes it all the more upsetting when they get written out so quickly!

Eva had a number of issues that count against it, so although it's a long-term favourite of mine I still admit that it's flawed. I'm also glad that Endo was able to draw inspiration from it, yet do something of his own that's impressive in its own right (and very different too). Eden is the more believable and true-to-life of the two as well.

I think the retail edition's been out for a couple of years now, but I only just started reading it last week! I can imagine a scene as powerful as that must have really moved you at such a young age...I can imagine there will be plenty more powerful moments coming up later too, so I'm looking forward to continuing this one (as in, actually buying more rather than putting it on hiatus and developing a huge backlog again).

Great manga, great post. This also made a huge impression on me when I first read it (it still has a big impression on me while not reading it), and even though Endou said he was discouraged by Eva, I personally like this manga more than Eva. (Please don't hurt me) It's just so realistic and maybe kind of not really plausible that it really gets me thinking, and without the emotiems, robots, or other oft-used devices. I don't read a lot of eco-science themed manga either, so this was really refreshing. It's also crazy how most, if not all, the characters are unique and have sufficient development until they're killed off and such (that stupid mine!), but the bad part about this is that I grow attached to them and don't want them to die.

Lastly, Sophia is far too awesome.

Oh wow, I never knew that you haven't read this yet. I literally grew up with Eden. I was 13 when I read volume 3 and the girl who died on the mine left quite a huge impression on me.
